About
Inspiration
This series 2022-2023 is titled “Weaving with the Ancestors.” My pottery embodies a personal feminist perspective, combined with memories of my mother, grandmothers, and aunts sitting in the warm sunlight and chilly mountain air, all in a circle of mismatched lawn chairs. Each woman knitting, crocheting, and embroidering useful, beautiful, durable textiles to be worn by the family. I remember their voices, laughter, and the storytelling. I remember the women helping each other with their projects and teaching the next generation their skills. My sculptures are a homage to the women of my family and the gorgeous legacy and lasting value of their craft.
Technique
These clay sculptures are handbuilt, using slab and coil methods. I use a fettling knife to achieve the woven texture. Each piece is underglazed and fired to cone 10.
